China and Pakistan Commit to Strengthening Economic, Trade Ties and Anti-Terrorism Efforts

On January 5, 2026, China and Pakistan pledged to enhance their historically close partnership and deepen bilateral cooperation. Both nations reiterated their "ironclad" friendship in a joint statement, highlighting their commitment to boosting economic collaboration, with a particular focus on expanding the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). This move comes as relations between Islamabad and Washington continue to warm.

China has long been one of Pakistan's most important allies, supporting Islamabad on sensitive international issues, including the status of Taiwan, Xinjiang, Tibet, Hong Kong, and the South China Sea. In return, China has invested heavily in Pakistan through the CPEC initiative, part of its broader Belt and Road Initiative. However, the relationship has been marred by repeated Islamist militant attacks on Chinese nationals working on various projects in Pakistan.

The renewed pledge between Beijing and Islamabad comes at a time when US-Pakistani relations have also improved, particularly since President Donald Trump’s return to the White House. Pakistan has hailed its cooperation with the U.S. on counter-terrorism, including the capture of key terrorist figures, and praised Trump's role in resolving a conflict with India.

In the latest statement, China commended Pakistan for its comprehensive measures to ensure the safety of Chinese personnel and projects. Both countries also called for increased efforts to dismantle terrorist organizations in Afghanistan, though no specific details were provided.

Pakistan continues to be a key partner for China, regarded as an "all-weather strategic partner," with ties that date back decades. Beijing values Pakistan’s role as a stabilizing force in the region, but the growing US-Pakistani ties may shift the strategic balance in South Asia.
