Germany continues its long-standing partnership with Bangladesh, focusing on energy transition, climate resilience, and skills development.
On January 8, Bangladesh and Germany signed grant agreements worth a total of €21.77 million for five key development projects aimed at supporting energy transition, climate resilience, skills development, social inclusion, and the adoption of green technologies.
The agreements were signed by Md. Shahriar Kader Siddiky, Secretary of the Economic Relations Division (ERD) of Bangladesh, and Heinrich-Juergen Schilling, Country Director of GIZ Bangladesh, at the ERD Conference Room in Dhaka.
A major portion of the grant, €9 million, will be allocated to strengthen Bangladesh’s institutional, economic, and human resource capacities to support an environmentally sustainable and socially just energy transition. This will be backed by the Advisory for Promoting Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (PAP) II project, which will run until 2029 under the Power Division.
Germany has also committed €4.80 million for the INTEGRATE project, focusing on the economic empowerment of women, including persons with disabilities, who have been affected by climate change-induced natural disasters. This project will be implemented by the Department of Social Services under the Ministry of Social Welfare from October 2023 to September 2027.
A €7 million grant will fund the Professional Education in Industrial and Environmental Safety (PRECISE) project. It will strengthen Bangladesh's technical and vocational education and training (TVET) sector, running from July 2025 to June 2029 under the Directorate of Technical Education and the Bangladesh Technical Education Board.
Additionally, €0.8 million will support the Green Room Air-Conditioning (GRACE) project under the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change. This initiative aims to promote climate-friendly and energy-efficient room air-conditioning solutions from August 2025 to July 2028.
Germany is also extending €0.175 million to the Digital Skills to Succeed in Asia (DS2S) project, which aims to enhance employment opportunities in Asia’s labor market through ethics-based technological skills. The project, running until December 2026, was initially launched with €0.382 million in January 2023.
Since 1972, Germany has been a long-standing development partner of Bangladesh, contributing around €4 billion in financial and technical assistance. Currently, GIZ is providing €100.72 million in grant assistance for 18 ongoing projects in the country.
