Mata Vaishno Medical College cancels admissions for Mostly Muslims got the chance

India’s National Medical Commission has withdrawn permission to run the MBBS course at a Jammu-based medical institute. The move has triggered nationwide controversy after reports noted that a majority of selected students were Muslim.

The decision came after 44 out of 50 students selected in the 2025-26 admission test were Muslims, sparking intense debate and political tension across the country.

According to local sources and Indian media reports, soon after the admission list was released, various groups close to the Hindutva movement, RSS and BJP, started protesting against the college. They alleged that the number of Muslim students in a government medical college was ‘unusually high’, which they were not ready to accept.

Amidst these protests, the NMC announced the cancellation of the college’s permission for the MBBS course. Although the official statement from the commission did not directly mention the issue of Muslim students, the ruling BJP has explained the issue as “a question of quality, not quantity”.

On the other hand, critics and human rights organizations have alleged that cancelling the permission of a medical college based on the religious identity of students selected on the basis of merit is against the principles of secularism and equal rights in education of the Indian Constitution. According to them, this is a reflection of the radical Hindutva pressure to limit the participation of Muslims in the field of education.

The incident came at a time when allegations of discrimination against Muslim students, educational institutions and minority rights have been rising in various states of India under the Modi government.

According to analysts, the cancellation of permission to Mata Vaishno Medical College is not just an administrative decision, but also indicates deep concerns about the participation of minorities in higher education and professional advancement.

The incident has raised new questions about the safety of minorities in Jammu, equal opportunities in education and the reality of secularism in India.
