Bangladesh and Pakistan Discuss Potential Arms Deal for Enhanced Bilateral Relations
On January 7, 2026, discussions took place between the Air Chiefs of Bangladesh and Pakistan regarding the potential sale of the JF-17 Thunder fighter jets, marking a step toward strengthening defense ties between the two nations. The talks were part of broader discussions on expanding Pakistan's defense exports and bolstering bilateral relations.
Held in Islamabad, the meeting between Bangladesh's Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmud Khan and Pakistan's Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu also addressed the swift supply of Super Mushshak training aircraft to Bangladesh. In addition, Pakistan assured long-term technical support and complete training packages for Bangladesh.
This strategic conversation comes at a time when Pakistan seeks to leverage its success in the air during recent confrontations with India to boost its defense industry. The JF-17 Thunder, a multi-role fighter developed in cooperation with China, is central to Pakistan’s military ambitions and has already been part of agreements with countries such as Azerbaijan and Libya.
The move signals a growing partnership between Bangladesh and Pakistan, following a deterioration in Bangladesh-India relations after political unrest in August 2024. Pakistan’s military leadership emphasized that this meeting underscored the historical ties between the two nations, aiming to enhance defense cooperation and establish a long-term strategic partnership.
This collaboration also follows remarks by Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif, who expressed confidence that the country's defense industry could significantly impact its economic future, possibly reducing the need for external financial aid.
