Spain Ready to Send Troops to Palestine for Peacekeeping: Sanchez
Spain expresses readiness to deploy peacekeeping forces to Palestine, similar to its willingness to send troops to Ukraine.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has announced that Spain is prepared to send peacekeeping forces to Palestine, should the opportunity arise. Speaking at a gathering of Spanish ambassadors in Madrid on Thursday, Sanchez emphasized Spain's commitment to bringing peace to Palestine, especially in Gaza, where the situation remains unbearable.
He stated, "If given the chance, I will propose in parliament that we send peacekeeping troops to Palestine." Sanchez reiterated Spain's focus on the Palestinian cause and stressed that the country had not forgotten Gaza. "To bring hope back to Palestine, Spain must actively participate," he added.
The Spanish leader also reiterated Spain's willingness to deploy troops to Ukraine in the context of peace agreements. He described the current moment in Ukraine as critical for achieving peace, highlighting the importance of international support in resolving the conflict. Sanchez questioned why Spain could not send peacekeepers to Europe, given its willingness to send forces to distant regions like Palestine.
However, Russian President Vladimir Putin has firmly opposed the presence of foreign peacekeeping troops on Ukrainian soil, which adds a layer of complexity to Spain's proposal.
Spain’s government, which recognized Palestine as a state in 2024, has been a vocal critic of the Israeli actions in Gaza, referring to them as genocidal. Sanchez also recently met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to raise awareness about the plight of the Palestinian people.
