US President to discuss Greenland at World Economic Forum and warns Denmark it cannot protect the territory.
In a bold statement at the World Economic Forum in Davos this week, US President Donald Trump reiterated his stance on Greenland, declaring that the United States must acquire the territory. He warned Denmark, which governs Greenland as an autonomous region, that it would be unable to protect the island.
Speaking to reporters on January 19 in Florida, Trump said, "We have to get it. They have to do it. Denmark, they are great people, but they can’t protect it." He also praised Denmark's leadership, stating that while he knew the Danish leaders were excellent people, they do not have a presence in Greenland.
Trump emphasized that Greenland is of "strategic importance" to the US and will be discussed with leaders from various countries at the ongoing World Economic Forum. He further stated, “I don’t think they’ll oppose it. Greenland is very important to the United States.”
In a further escalation, Trump threatened to impose tariffs on NATO allies, including the United Kingdom, if they opposed his plan. These tariffs could rise from 10% to 25% by June. European leaders have criticized his actions, calling them "blackmail." However, Trump remained firm, claiming that the tariff measures will be fully implemented.
Trump has also proposed buying Greenland from Denmark, and if the offer is rejected, he suggested the possibility of using military force against Denmark despite their NATO membership. He justified this as a matter of national security, citing Greenland’s crucial position for missile detection and its resource wealth.
Additionally, Trump made controversial remarks regarding the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean, calling plans for transferring its ownership a "foolish" move, which he described as a "major threat" to US and allied national security.
