The UK government has unveiled a paid “gap year” programmee allowing young people to experience life in the armed forces. The initiative aims to attract school leavers and young adults without requiring a long-term military commitment.

The United Kingdom government has announced a new paid Armed Forces Foundation Scheme, offering young people the opportunity to take a year-long “gap year” in the military, with the programme set to launch in March 2026.

Under the scheme, around 150 participants will initially be recruited to train and work across the British Army, Royal Navy, and Royal Air Force. The government said it hopes to expand the programme to more than 1,000 young people, depending on interest.

UK Defence Secretary John Healey described the initiative as marking “a new era for Defence,” saying it would give young people first-hand experience of the skills, discipline, and training offered by the armed forces. The scheme targets school leavers and adults under 25 who may be uncertain about their future career paths.

Participants will be paid and receive basic military training, followed by placements that could include work at sea or alongside specialist units. Officials stressed that those enrolled will not be deployed on active operations. While final salary details have not been confirmed, a typical starting pay for a basic recruit is around £26,000 per year.

The government said the programme will also focus on building transferable civilian skills, such as logistics, engineering, and supply-chain management, alongside training in problem-solving, teamwork, and leadership.

According to the government, the announcement follows calls from Richard Knighton, head of the UK armed forces, for a “whole-nation response” to what he described as an increasingly volatile and uncertain global security environment.
