US President Donald Trump told Norway’s prime minister he no longer feels obligated to “think purely of peace” after not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, while reiterating his demand for control of Greenland.
US President Donald Trump has told Norway’s prime minister that he no longer feels bound to think exclusively in terms of peace, citing his failure to receive the Nobel Peace Prize and renewing his demand for US control over Greenland, according to a letter seen by Reuters.
The letter was sent in response to a joint message from Jonas Gahr Støre and Alexander Stubb, who opposed Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on European allies over their refusal to allow the United States to take control of Greenland.
“Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace,” Trump wrote, adding that while peace would remain “predominant,” he would now focus on what he believes is “good and proper for the United States of America.”
Prime Minister Støre said he had repeatedly explained to Trump that the Norwegian Nobel Committee-which awards the Nobel Peace Prize-operates independently and is not controlled by the Norwegian government.
Trump has long been vocal about his desire to receive the Nobel Peace Prize and has publicly argued that his foreign policy actions merit the award. The prize last year was awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado.
The letter comes amid rising transatlantic tensions following Trump’s repeated assertions that the United States needs Greenland for national security reasons and his threats of economic measures against European allies who reject the idea. The remarks have sparked concern in Europe about growing strains in US–EU relations and the broader implications for NATO unity.
