Bangladesh Ranks 13th in Global Crypto Adoption Despite Legal Ban
Despite the legal ban on cryptocurrency transactions in Bangladesh, the country has emerged as one of the top adopters globally, securing the 13th spot on the 2025 Global Crypto Adoption Index.
Bangladesh has achieved a notable ranking in the global cryptocurrency adoption index, securing the 13th position among 151 countries, according to Chainalysis’ 2025 Global Crypto Adoption Index. This ranking comes despite the country’s legal prohibition on cryptocurrency transactions, reflecting the growing popularity of digital currencies among the masses.
The index, compiled by the blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis, is based on grassroots crypto adoption, considering how widely digital currencies are accepted by the general public. Bangladesh has moved up four spots from the 17th position in 2024, overtaking several advanced economies, and is now ranked just behind Brazil (10th) and Thailand (12th). In South Asia, Bangladesh is now the second-largest crypto user country after India.
India continues to hold the top spot for the second consecutive year, owing to its large population and extensive digital transactions. Other countries in the top five include Nigeria, Vietnam, the United States, and Indonesia. Notably, seven of the top 20 countries in the index are lower-middle-income nations, with the United States being the only developed country in the top five.
The increase in Bangladesh’s crypto usage is attributed to factors such as remittances, gaming, and the need to preserve wealth against inflation. Despite repeated warnings from the central bank and law enforcement agencies about the risks associated with crypto transactions, many users are turning to digital currencies as an alternative investment and savings method. The data for this report was analyzed from July 2024 to June 2025.
