Armed Police Flood Sydney Streets as New Year Marked Under Tight Security
Thousands of heavily armed police officers were deployed across Sydney during New Year celebrations following the Bondi Beach mass shooting. Authorities said the rare security measures were necessary to ensure public safety.
Thousands of heavily armed police officers patrolled the streets of Sydney as residents welcomed the New Year under unprecedented security measures, following the Bondi Beach mass shooting earlier this month.
The New South Wales Police said more than 2,500 officers were deployed across the city, with some authorised to carry high-grade firearms, a rare and striking sight in Australia. Images from Sydney Harbour, where large crowds traditionally gather to watch the New Year’s Eve fireworks, showed officers patrolling with long-arm weapons among the crowds.
The heightened security follows the December 14 attack at Bondi Beach, which targeted Australia’s Jewish community during a Hanukkah festival, killing 15 people. In response, official New Year’s Eve celebrations were briefly paused at 11:00pm local time for a minute’s silence in memory of the victims, while the Sydney Harbour Bridge was illuminated in white to symbolise peace.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns acknowledged that the visible security presence could be confronting for some. “Police will be carrying firearms and weapons that you haven’t seen before,” he said ahead of the event. “But I don’t make any apology for that. We want people to be safe in our community.”
Authorities said the measures were taken to reassure the public and deter potential threats, as Sydney marked the New Year amid heightened vigilance and reflection following one of the deadliest attacks in the country’s recent history.
