European Leaders Rally Behind Greenland Amid Renewed US Threats
The Chronify
European leaders have voiced strong support for Greenland and Denmark after renewed remarks from the United States suggesting possible action to take control of the Arctic territory, raising concerns over sovereignty and regional stability.
European leaders have closed ranks in support of Greenland following renewed statements from the United States that have reignited tensions over the future of the autonomous Danish territory.
The show of unity comes after the White House said President Donald Trump is exploring ways to bring Greenland under US control, with military force described as a possible option. The remarks have unsettled European capitals and sparked fears of a fracture within the transatlantic alliance.
Leaders from Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Spain issued a joint statement alongside Denmark, reaffirming their commitment to the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders. They stressed that Arctic security is critical to European and transatlantic stability and must be addressed collectively through NATO.
Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen reiterated that the island is not for sale and that only the people of Greenland have the right to determine their future. Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said Copenhagen is seeking urgent talks with Washington to resolve what he described as “misunderstandings.”
French President Emmanuel Macron said he could not imagine a scenario in which the United States would violate Danish sovereignty, while UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Europe’s position had been clearly communicated.
Greenland holds growing strategic importance due to its location in the Arctic, untapped rare earth resources and emerging shipping routes as polar ice melts. The United States already maintains a military base on the island.
European officials warned that any attempt to undermine Greenland’s status would set a dangerous precedent, underscoring that decisions about the territory’s future rest solely with Denmark and Greenland.
