Trump Says Iran Has Halted Protester Killings, Tehran Denies Plans for Hangings
US President Donald Trump said he has been assured that killings of protesters in Iran have stopped and that planned executions will not go ahead, while Iranian authorities insist there was never any plan for hangings.
US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he had received assurances from what he described as “very important sources on the other side” that Iran has halted the killing of protesters and will not proceed with executions previously reported by rights groups.
Speaking at the White House, Trump said: “They’ve said the killing has stopped and the executions won’t take place. There were supposed to be a lot of executions today, and that the executions won’t take place — and we’re going to find out.” He added that the United States has not yet independently verified the claims and that Washington would “watch it and see.”
The remarks marked a shift in tone after days of sharp warnings from Trump, who had publicly threatened “very strong action” if Iranian authorities carried out hangings of detained protesters. Human rights organisations have alleged that Iran’s crackdown on recent demonstrations has resulted in the deaths of at least 3,400 people.
Iran, however, rejected Trump’s assertions and accusations. Officials in Tehran said there was “no plan for hanging protesters” and accused Washington of spreading misinformation and using human rights claims as a pretext for pressure and possible intervention.
The situation remains tense as international scrutiny continues over Iran’s handling of the protests. While Trump said the reported halt was a “positive development,” he cautioned that the US would continue monitoring events closely before drawing conclusions or taking further action.
